POSITION: Fisheries Aide (Commercial Monitor –1 position)
LOCATION: Red Cliff Natural Resources Department
WAGE: $8.00 - $9.00 per hour depending on qualifications. 35-40 hours per week
SUPERVISOR(S): Fish and Wildlife Biologist and Fisheries Technician
JOB SUMMARY: Monitor tribal commercial fishermen in the Apostle Islands area of Lake Superior. Individuals will be under the supervision of the Fish Technician and the Fish and Wildlife Biologist.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary duties involve recording the targeted and incidental catch of Lake Superior fish from tribal gill nets, and collecting biological information on those fish. Other duties may include maintenance and repair of assessment nets and other sampling equipment, assisting the Natural Resources Department with other project work, and general building and grounds maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE: Experience in commercial fishing operations is desired but not necessary, as in the ability to identify common Lake Superior commercial fish species. All applicants will receive training to successfully complete the assigned duties of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be responsible, dependable, safe, and have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and reliable transportation to work. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions, and to work independently or in small teams. The applicant should be in good physical condition and have the ability to work long hours on Lake Superior, often in rough weather conditions during early morning hours and occasional weekends. Indian preference will be applied in the case of equally qualified applicants, but all applicants will be considered. Must be knowledgeable of Native American tribes and the uniqueness of the Red Cliff community.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Individual will have frequent contact with tribal commercial fishermen, and will also work with personnel from the Red Cliff Natural Resources Department and the Wisconsin department of Natural Resources.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Primarily a vigorous field oriented position involving extensive exposure to the elements; lifting, bending, and walking under wet and slippery conditions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Most duties will be conducted in a field setting on tribal commercial gill net boats during early morning hours and variable weather conditions. Other field duties will be conducted in forested stream habitats in rain, sun, mud and bugs. The base of operations will be the Tribal Fish Hatchery Complex. Necessary field equipment, safety gear, and specialty clothing will be provided.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Travel will generally be limited to movement between home, the Red Cliff Hatchery Complex, and boat docks in Red Cliff and Bayfield. Use of personal vehicle will be compensated.
